January 23 2022 – Live Reading: Letters in Jane Austen’s Novels: From Lovers to Villains to Fools

Join JASNA-NC as we embark on a fabulous and fun live reading of a selection of letters from Jane Austen’s novels!

In a letter to her sister Cassandra, Jane Austen once wrote: “I have now attained the true art of letter-writing, which we are always told, is to express on paper exactly what one would say the same person by word of mouth.” In this meeting, we will hear a selection of famous letters from Jane Austen’s novels, read by our very own member volunteers (and possibly with props or even costumes!).

We have roles for up to 15 people. If you’re interested in being a reader, please email Karin and/or indicate your preference when you register. We’ll send the script to participants ahead of the meeting so they have time to rehearse.

From Captain Wentworth’s impassioned letter to Mr. Collins’s moronic missives, all of Jane’s novels are represented, and you may hear from your favorite character. Whether you volunteer to read or would just like to listen, it promises to be a rollicking good time for all!

Our May meeting will be held on May 17 from 2:00 to 3:30 and is our Virtual Book club. Those who attended the Virtual Conference got a sampling of Devoney Looser's Wild for Austen from the author herself. It was fascinating and her book was the choice for our reading this next month. We will have a great time discussing her research and observations, so plan to join us! You can register at this link: us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/jHW1d3uLTeCTzhltLRWRgQ ... See MoreSee Less

JASNA-NC April MeetingTouring Jane Austen CountryJoin JASNA-North Carolina member Pamela Hale and her husband, Dutch Tubman, for “Two Anniversaries in England: From Train to Jane.” They’ll share how they got around England to visit Jane Austen-related sites as well as how Jane and the Austen family might have traveled. Their Jane itinerary included Steventon, Basingstoke, Bath, Alton, Chawton, Winchester, Reading, Southampton, Oxford, London, and Canterbury. They rode more than 30 trains, returned by the Queen Mary II, and, after docking in Brooklyn, stayed in Manhattan to visit the exhibition A Lively Mind at the Morgan Library. Look forward to photos of homes, churches, entertainments (such as the Merlin Swing and the Catch-Me-Who-Can), maps, vehicles, and quotes from Jane’s writings and letters! The DetailsWhat: Touring Jane Austen Country with JASNA-NC member Pamela Hale and Dutch TubmanWhen: April 12, 2026 from 2:00-3:30 p.m.Where: In the comfort of your home via Zoom.RSVP: ...
