December 10, 2023 – Everything a Janeite Needs to Know & Birthday Celebration

It’s time to party, folks! For the December meeting, our annual celebration of Jane’s birthday, we are going to be in person and online to learn everything we need to know as lovers of Jane Austen.

Do you ever listen to other Janeites, and wonder:

  • Why are chapters in some book editions numbered one through whatever, while other editions of the same book are broken into volumes?
  • What is this “juvenilia” I keep hearing about? Is it the same thing as the “teenage writings”?
  • Why on earth is the JASNA annual conference called the “AGM”, and what do those letters stand for?
  • Why are peacocks so closely associated with Pride and Prejudice, even though I’ve read the whole book and there are absolutely NO peacocks in it?
  • Is there really any point in knowing the difference between a gig and a barouche?

Janeite Sue Scott (who has at one time or another been confused about these and many other things) will attempt to solve these and other Austen-related mysteries for you. We’ll also go over the talking points for each of the novels—the things you need to know in order to follow the discussion of these novels even if you haven’t read them yet. You will leave the party with an increased Austen IQ!

Schedule

Our approximate schedule for the afternoon will be:

  • 2-2:30 arrive and partake of nibbles and good company (Zoomers will do the same!)
  • 2:30-3:30 program and Q&A, toast to Jane
  • 3:30-4 more nibbles and good company

If you are attending in person, please bring your favorite birthday nibble (sweet or savory) to share. If you will be on Zoom, bring a treat for yourself and a beverage to make a toast!
